The 296 Speciale was always a question of ‘when’ not 'if'. The only thing that was in doubt was whether the moniker ‘Speciale’ would be used. Now, that question has been answered, and all fans of the Maranello Marque can rejoice in the introduction of the limited-edition, performance-focused version of the plug-in hybrid 296 GTB.
Building on the foundation of 'regular' hybrid V6 model, the 296 Speciale aims to enhance Ferrari’s growing track-bred lineup by delivering a sharper driving experience, reduced weight, and refined aerodynamics.
The 296 GTB was already a landmark model, with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired with an electric motor to deliver a combined 830 hp. Borrowing heavily from the combustion engine in the 296 Challenge race car and an upgraded electric motor, the Speciale gives that a bump to 880 hp. The engine noise also gets an upgrade from the GTB model, which is no slouch in that department.
While the 8-speed dual clutch transmission in the GTB remains the same in the Speciale, it gets a new upshift management profile. The new car also benefits from a knock control system, which originated from Formula 1. Weight-saving goals prompted a shift from steel to titanium connecting rods and the addition of a lighter crankshaft.
In a move that echoes the ethos behind past Ferrari “Speciale” and “Pista” variants, the 296 Speciale promises a more visceral iteration of Ferrari’s hybrid supercar.
From a design perspective, the 296 Speciale retains the elegant proportions and compact form of the GTB, but it has differences that aren’t obvious like its distinct aerodynamic updates in line with its increased performance goals.
These include new front-end detailing, a reworked diffuser, and more generous use of carbon fiber across the body panels. The Speciale generates 435kg of downforce at 250km/h (that’s 20% more than the 296 GTB), another thing it can thank the Challenge car for.
Notably, these aerodynamic changes have been integrated with careful consideration of the car’s hybrid cooling requirements to ensure thermal efficiency remains uncompromised.
Inside the cabin, changes to align with the racing focus are evident in almost every corner. Weight-saving measures dominate the interior, with stripped-down materials, a generous use of carbon fiber and aluminum, and thinner door panels that evoke the philosophy of performance first.
Bucket seats, a simplified central console, and reduced sound insulation help drop the car’s weight and connect the driver more closely to its mechanical heartbeat.
Braking performance should benefit from the use of Ferrari’s latest-generation carbon-ceramic systems, optimized for thermal resistance under extreme load. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires keep the car firmly connected to the road surface to match the heightened performance envelope.
As with other Speciale or Pista models before it, the 296 Speciale will be produced in limited numbers, with Ferrari prioritizing its most loyal clients. The Speciale badge elevates the status of the 296 and every fan of the Maranello marque will likely be anticipating a chance for a test drive. Ferrari’s press release was silent on pricing but that’s not going to affect demand. If you’re looking to score an allocation, the call to your dealer must have already been made.
