Line 2, which goes all the way to the airport, stops a short walk away at Jean-Médecin, and down to Port Lympia, where incredible bay views await. It’s a relaxing way to enjoy the allure of Nice. So what makes this square so appealing?
The Sun Fountain: Art, Mythology, and a Meeting Point
You’re not likely to find anyone willing to argue that Fontaine du Soleil (Sun Fountain) isn’t the ‘star of the Place Massena show’. Bordering the Old Town, the fountain steals the show. The seven-meter-high Apollo sculpture by Alfred Janniot, carved in pale marble, rises from the water, encircled by bronze figures. It draws you into the scene and makes it almost impossible to look away.

The Green Axis: Promenade du Paillon
On the inland side of the square, Promenade du Paillon unfurls as a 12-hectare “coulée verte” - a landscaped green corridor connecting the contemporary art museum (MAMAC) with Promenade des Anglais. Its tree-lined paths and broad lawns offer a calm counterpoint to the city's buzz, while the mirror-like water feature and playful jets at the Miroir d’Eau invite children (and grown-ups) to cool off when temperatures rise.
Gateway to the Old Town
Walk east from the fountain, and the ordered geometry of Place Masséna gives way to the charm of Vieux Nice. Here you’ll find narrow, shadowed lanes, small wine bars, ice-cream parlors, and the famous Cours Saleya market. A late-afternoon stroll from Place Masséna into Vieux Nice for an apéritif feels almost obligatory for any trip to Nice.
While you’re in the Old Town, you have to try one of Côte d’Azur’s popular snacks, Socca.

Walking west of Place Masséna, along Avenue Jean Médecin, brings you to Galeries Lafayette Nice Masséna, the city’s flagship department store. Its five floors house more than 600 brands across fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, with a strong luxury lineup that includes labels such as Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Chloé, and Gucci.
Often described as the French Riviera’s answer to Harrods, it is the natural first stop for designer attire and accessories. You can continue your retail therapy in the chic boutiques along Rue de la Liberté and the pedestrian-only Rue Paradis.
