Eze

The morning dawned cool and luminous as I set out bound for the legendary heights of Èze. A village suspended between sea and sky, where philosophers climbed in search of answers and icons escaped in pursuit of beauty, it’s the kind of destination that doesn’t simply ask to be visited, but insists on being felt.

The day begins the way all great Riviera stories should, with sunlight spilling over terracotta rooftops. I boarded the train knowing this would be no ordinary journey.

The train glides east out of Nice, hugging the coastline like it knows it’s part of the seduction, window frame flashes of turquoise coves, impossibly perched villages, and cliffs plunging straight into the Mediterranean. It’s less a commute and more a slow unfurling—an elegant exhale from Nice city buzz into something older, wilder, and infinitely more poetic.

By the time I arrive near Èze-sur-Mer, the air has changed. Pine and salt mingle in a way that signals altitude and adventure. Above me, the cliffs rise sharply. And so do I - toward the Nietzsche Trail.

This is no casual stroll. Etched into the mountainside, the trail climbs with intent, winding through rock, scrubland, and silence. Friedrich Nietzsche once walked here, wrestling with big ideas while composing 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra,' and it’s easy to see why. The ascent took me just over an hour and 5 minutes, to be precise, with generous five-minute pauses at viewpoints that demanded reverence.

Below, the Mediterranean stretches endlessly, glittering and indifferent. Up here, standing on the edge of a cliff, one can’t help but question scale and meaning. Are we infinite? Or merely fleeting silhouettes against an ancient horizon? The feeling is unshakable, even if the answers remain elusive.

At the summit, indulgence makes its grand entrance.

Perched dramatically on the cliff like a well-kept secret, the Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or appears - part medieval fortress, part Riviera fantasy. This legendary castle-hotel is the embodiment of adventure meeting refinement. Stone walls whisper centuries of history while manicured terraces spill toward the sea.

Gardens cascade down the cliffs in a riot of color, bougainvillea, citrus, and Mediterranean greens, perfuming the air with luxury. It’s no wonder princesses, artists, Grand Prix drivers, and icons of cinema have all found refuge here. From Grace Kelly and Cary Grant filming To Catch a Thief to writers, musicians, and royalty seeking inspiration, Èze has long been a muse for those who live boldly.

Wandering onward, the Jardin Exotique d'Èze crowns the village like a botanical jewel. Exotic plants and sculptural cacti frame uninterrupted views of the coastline, the Mediterranean stretching so far it feels almost cosmic.

Among the flora stand the serene sculptures by Jean-Philippe Richard. Quiet, timeless feminine forms crafted from bronze, crystal, and earth. He calls earth the “dust of stars,” and here, his goddesses feel perfectly at home, glowing softly among the plants, as if they’ve always belonged to this cliffside sanctuary.

Èze itself is layered with stories. Writers once gasped at its narrow paths. Madame de Genlis confessed her terror traversing them in 1780. George Sand called the coastal roads a masterpiece of human achievement. Photographers like Pierre Brassar captured its shifting light.

The church of Èze-Village (Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption), built in the 18th century atop old castle ruins, stands in elegant contrast: a restrained façade concealing a richly baroque interior, where saints watch quietly over centuries of pilgrims and passersby.

Even the roads here come with legends. The Èze viaduct, spanning a dramatic ravine, is said to have been built with the Devil’s help, outwitted by a clever shepherd and his dog. It’s the kind of story that fits perfectly in a place where beauty always carries a hint of danger and wit.

As the day winds down, the feeling lingers. Not clarity, exactly, but certainty of sensation. Adventure in the legs. Salt on the skin. History underfoot. Luxury not as excess, but as depth. Unsure of the meaning of it all, but absolutely sure of the feeling.
