Emotions are still raw as we continue to mourn the discontinuation of the Audi R8, so when we heard of the release of a new supercar from Audi, as you can imagine, there was eager anticipation and excitement all around.
Now that it's here (and what better time to introduce it than the eve of the Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco), let’s assess what we have. The Audi Nuvolari isn’t exactly the R8 replacement we were hoping for. Instead, it is a limited-production car that brings together hybrid power, Formula 1-inspired innovation, and a new design language.
The Nuvolari, as revealed by Audi, is a near-production prototype. The 4.8-liter biturboV8 engine assisted by three axial flux electric motors produces 986hp, allowing the car to go from 0-100km/h in 2.6 seconds, and brag of a top speed of more than 350 km/h. Those numbers make it the most powerful production car ever made by the German marque, and only 499 examples are planned (you have to wonder what inspired that peculiar number).
The model follows the brand’s new design philosophy and its entry into Formula 1, positioning the Nuvolari as a flagship for a new era.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner described the car as “a statement for the future of Audi” and a new expression of performance in the age of electrification (never mind the sharp drop in demand for EVs in the consumer market). The supercar introduces Audi’s first high-performance hybrid powertrain in this segment and showcases technologies such as quattro predictive ride, active aerodynamics, and an Audi Space Frame with a carbon exterior.
Audi says it will be the first production vehicle to fully express the company’s new design philosophy, with taut surfaces, precise lines, and a powerful, monolithic presence. Inside, the focus remains firmly on the driving experience, paired with a refined and sophisticated exterior.
Its name pays tribute to Tazio Nuvolari, the Italian motorsport legend remembered for his courage, ingenuity, and determination. That spirit appears to guide the car’s character: focused, exclusive, and engineered to demonstrate the next phase of Audi performance.
The Nuvolari is also a deliberate move into a more rarefied performance space. Marco Schubert, Audi’s Board Member for Sales and Marketing, said the model represents “exclusivity, performance, and the ultimate in desirability,” while reinforcing the brand’s ambition to be at the top of the list of most desirable premium automotive marques.
Marketing speak aside, though, that design is likely to be polarizing. On one hand, it appears futuristic, looking to take Audi into the next generation of car design. Some views bring to mind Jony Ive's narrations of design influence as he describes machining MacBooks from a single block of aluminum. On the other hand, the Nuvolari has some design similarities to (dare I say?) the Tesla Cyber truck, and that’s not a compliment.
But before fans get their pitchforks out and call for the heads of the executives who approved the design, Audi did acknowledge that what they revealed is a prototype, so there’s no need to take a position (one way or the other) yet.
Let’s all just enjoy the sign that Audi's F1 participation is spurring innovation that will likely trickle down into the company’s consumer product line. Better performance during the races may help tell a better story, but to be fair, it’s still early days for Audi's F1 endeavor. The best is yet to come. Given the car's limited production run and price tag ($700,000), the Audi Nuvolari is positioned as an engineering showcase and a collector’s item. Its combination of hybrid power, F1-inspired technology, and a new visual identity makes it a defining model for Audi’s next chapter. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.
