It’s no secret that owners of the largest yachts in the world love showing off their toys at Port Hercules in La Condamine, Monaco. There’s hardly a bad time to visit the port if you’re looking to catch a glimpse of some of the best vessels ever built.
At the east side of the port, just before the Fairmont Hotel tunnel, you’ll see a hard to miss building. It’s shaped like a luxury cruise ship and houses the Monaco Yacht Club (Yacht Club de Monaco, YCM).
The club is a prestigious hub for yachting enthusiasts, and the building is a key landmark few seek out (compared to other noteworthy landmarks in the principality). That's likely because it is a members-only club for the most part. However, it is open to non-members during some of its high-profile events.
Founded in 1953, the YCM seeks to cement Monaco's position as the premiere destination for yachting enthusiasts. Its current building overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea is a symbol of maritime heritage, luxury, and innovation. Foster + Partners, headed by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster, designed the building, and construction lasted from 2009 to 2014. Even if you're not familiar with the name, you'll know some of the projects they've worked on.
The building is without a doubt the most prominent on Boulevard Louis II and its terraces offer exceptional vantage positions to watch the Monaco Grand Prix, ePrix, or the regattas in Monaco.
As you can imagine, one of the few things superyacht owners desire but may not be able to get is membership at the YCM. So, what does it take to become a member? More on that after we explore what makes the club special.

The YCM building is an architectural masterpiece. Its sleek, multi-level design mirrors the aesthetic of a luxury yacht/cruise ship, complete with panoramic terraces, spacious decks, and a striking façade. The Monaco Yacht Club organizes (or is affiliated with) numerous world-class events that attract a global audience. YCM’s highlight event is the Classic Week, a biennial regatta celebrating traditional sailing yachts and vintage motorboats. This event combines elegance and nostalgia, with beautifully restored vessels competing against the backdrop of Monaco’s stunning coastline. Visitors can witness the spectacle from the YCM’s terraces or the port in the lively atmosphere that accompanies the races.
While the club doesn’t organize the Monaco Yacht Show, it plays a key role in the annual show some qualify as the best superyacht show on the planet. This prestigious event showcases innovative marine technology and the most luxurious superyachts, drawing shipbuilders, designers, and buyers from around the globe. The show offers attendees a unique opportunity to step aboard cutting-edge vessels and immerse themselves in the world of elite yachting. However, the best events during the show are by invitation only (more on that soon).
Other notable events include the Monaco Optimist Team Race open to children under the age of fourteen, and the Captain’s Forum, for captains of superyachts. The YCM hosts public exhibitions, cultural events, and lectures on maritime history and sustainability, providing enriching experiences for those interested in the nautical world.
The club also promotes sustainability and innovation through events like the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge, where participants showcase eco-friendly marine technologies. These events provide a forward-looking perspective on yachting, appealing to the environmentally conscious crowd and innovators.
Shopping
You can indulge in a little retail therapy at the club. The YCM Boutique has a variety of membership products including badges and burgees, and exclusive “Art de Vivre la Mer” (Art of Living the Sea ) items. Other retail stores include the Wine Palace, offering fine wine and related goods, Brooks Brothers, and the BMW Store. If you’re seeking to insure your yacht, Only Yacht, a subsidiary of Suisscourtage (Broker at Lloyd’s), is available to take care of all your yacht insurance needs.
Membership
So, what does it take to become a member? While ownership of a superyacht regularly moored at Port Hercules isn't an express criterion (nor a guarantee), it certainly can't hurt. Prospective members must have two 'sponsors' who are members of the club. These sponsors are responsible for educating the aspirant about the club's rules and objectives and involving them in sporting and social events.
The sponsors act as guarantors for the aspirant before the membership committee which HRH Prince Albert II presides over. As president of the club, the final decision on membership is the responsibility of the prince.
