Lamborghini took the opportunity to preview two new additions to their racing and sportscar lineage at the World Finals in Jerez de la Frontera recently. The famed company displayed the new Urus ST-X as well as a yet-unnamed 12 cylinder hypercar due out sometime in 2020. The Urus ST-X, aptly dubbed as a “Super SUV” has already gained international attention.
Urus ST-X
That attention is warranted! The Urus ST-X has all of the design and tech hallmarks of a Lamborghini while being a racing SUV. Only this SUV comes complete with roll cages, dynamic controls, racing aero package, racing seats with harnesses, fire suppression system, and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. That engine cranks out 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque!
Nine-time Motocross Champion Tony Cairoli is scheduled to pilot the Urus ST-X at the 2020 World Finals in Misano Adriatico, Italy. The Super SUV, on track and off track, will also feature a lighter structure with additional air intakes, carbon fiber bonnet, racing exhaust system, and racing carbon wing. The look will be completed by the signature Lamborghini Squadra Corse color named Verde Mantis, aka green, with red highlights.
New Hypercar by Squadra Corse
While the Urus ST-X already has dates for competition complete with a named driver, the same can not be said for the new 2020 Lamborghini hypercar. The new car is under development by Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Centro Stile in Sant’Agata Bolognese. According to the brief tease offered at Jerez de la Frontera, the car will be built upon the company’s iconic 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine delivering 830hp.
Design features of the limited-edition vehicle, to date, include a sleek Lamborghini look with hyper-car and racing features such as a large rear wing, a roof that includes an airscoop, and a “racing” front hood complete with dual air intakes. The structure of the hyper-car will be composed of an aluminum front frame completed with carbon fiber with a steel roll cage specifically designed for the engine with “bending and stiffness characteristics” in mind.
It will also include a 6-speed sequential Xtrac transmission with a structural load-bearing function that works with the suspension and the gearbox. The stated goal is to guarantee “optimal kinematics” and “significant improvement in the stiffness to weight ratio.” The driver will be able to adjust the innovative self-locking mechanical differential to optimize drivability depending on conditions and the unique features of any given track.
Both Lamborghini previews indicate that the company is continuing its innovative spirit. After all, how often does a car company have the opportunity to be a frontrunner in “Super” and “Hyper” cars while also introducing a “Super SUV” to car enthusiasts?
