It’s time for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, and Porsche has one additional thing to announce. In a tribute to the company’s storied motorsport history, the German marque unveiled the Porsche 963 RSP - a one-off creation that bridges the past and present of endurance racing.
Unveiled on the streets near the Circuit de la Sarthe during Le Mans week, this road-capable machine is a reinterpretation of the race-dominating 963 Hypercar, a winner in the IMSA and WEC championships.
Developed by a passionate team at Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport, and Porsche Cars North America - with direct involvement from Roger Penske himself, whose initials form the car’s name - the 963 RSP pays homage to the legendary 917 and its 1975 Paris road run.
The vision for the 963 RSP began as a “what if?” scenario, inspired by Count Rossi’s personal 917 journey from Zuffenhausen to Paris, where the car was driven with minimal modification on public roads. That spirit of uncompromising performance and distinctive design is at the core of the 963 RSP.
Although unmistakably a race car underneath, the RSP features street-legal adaptations: softened dampers, a raised ride height, road-appropriate lighting, Michelin wet compound tires, and even a horn. These allow it to wear French license plates under special permissions for its public debut.
The exterior sets it apart from its racing siblings with a Martini Silver paint finish - eschewing the typical race livery wrap for an ultra-challenging hand-painted application on carbon fiber and Kevlar® bodywork.
Its design echoes Count Rossi’s original aesthetic, enhanced with modified fender vents, satin black hardware, and a 1970s-era Michelin logo on the tire sidewalls. At the nose, a classic enamel Porsche crest replaces the usual graphic, while custom 3D-printed “963 RSP” badging adorns the rear.
Inside, the transformation is even more striking. The spartan cabin of the race-going 963 has been reimagined with tan leather and Alcantara surfaces, including retrimmed leg cushions, roof lining, and doors.
The fixed carbon seat has been upholstered for greater comfort, and a 3D-printed removable cup holder nods playfully to the car’s unique character. A dedicated platform beside the driver accommodates the Peltor headset, steering wheel, laptop interface, and Roger Penske’s bespoke carbon-fiber helmet.
The RSP retains its powerful hybrid V8 powertrain in standard race tune. Based on the 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 originally used in the RS Spyder and later in the 918 Spyder, it delivers approximately 680 hp. For the RSP, the control systems were reprogrammed for smoother power delivery suited to road use.
This special project took shape through the collaborative efforts of senior Porsche leadership and was made possible by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (special wishes) division, both in Zuffenhausen and Atlanta.
Their meticulous work extended to every detail - from a custom Snap-On tool chest trimmed in matching leather to a commemorative chassis plaque inside the cabin. Yet, despite its road-ready design, the 963 RSP is not homologated for series production. It is, and will remain, a one-off creation.
After its public debut at Le Mans, the car will return to Stuttgart for display at the Porsche Museum, followed by an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July - marking a rare opportunity for enthusiasts to witness a car that redefines what it means to bring a race car to the road.
