Vacheron Constantin has taken the wraps off its new addition to its Overseas collection - the Overseas Grand Complication Openface. It’s always a pleasure to learn about the intricate details of a grand complication timepiece, and this particular example merges bold contemporary aesthetics with some of the most sophisticated complications in mechanical watchmaking.
Housed within a titanium case that stays true to the Overseas line’s sporty elegance, the new watch integrates a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, tourbillon, and power reserve indicator, all within a movement that’s just 7.9 mm thick.
Powering the timepiece is Vacheron Constantin’s Calibre 2755 QP, a movement that has its roots in the legendary Tour de l’Île watch from 2005. Composed of 602 components, the manual-winding (sorry, your watch winder won’t help with keeping the timepiece chiming) caliber has a fascinating minute repeater governed by an advanced centripetal regulator.
Vacheron Constantin’s watchmakers developed the device to allow the minute repeater’s hammers to be struck at accurate intervals for the right musical sequences. A result that’s certainly worth the effort after all, which collector won’t appreciate the subtle melody of the precise chiming of a minute repeater?
Concerning details, there’s plenty that got the attention of the watchmakers. The bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève, repeater hammers are mirror-polished, and the arc-shaped 750/1000 gold bar securing the regulator is hand-polished for one whole day. One elegant yet subtle addition to the centrifugal weights on the repeater is the engraving of the initials of Jean-Marc Vacheron, founder of the watchmaker.
What about that tourbillon? It comes with convex and tapered bridges polished by hand. On the reverse side of the watch, a redesigned architecture gives the tourbillon an open and airy presence, allowing observers to fully appreciate its elegance, enhanced by its relatively ‘slow dance’ at 2.5 Hz rotation.
And the power reserve indicator? There clearly isn't one on the watch's dial, so it's fair to wonder where it's hiding. With the perpetual calendar subdials and tourbillon on the dial, finding a spot for it in front would have been challenging, so it's on the back of the watch. However, that's not sounding practical, particularly for a manual watch.
The Overseas Grand Complication Openface design doesn’t deviate from the collection’s DNA. If you’re familiar with the collection, you’ll be able to make the connection from a mile away. Despite housing four complications, the grade 5 titanium case measures 44.5 mm in diameter and just 13.1 mm thick.
Building significant water resistance into a watch with a minute repeater is notoriously difficult because of the sliding mechanism in the case-side responsible for the activity of the repeater. Vacheron Constantin invested a year and a half in R&D to redesign the caseback to achieve a water resistance of 30 meters (a respectable number for a minute repeater).
The bezel design combines sandblasting, polishing, and satin-brushing to emphasize the contemporary appeal of the titanium finish, now a signature of the Overseas collection.
The dial is a transparent sapphire canvas that exposes the intricate mechanics beneath. With 18K white gold markers and hands hovering over the dial, and blue metallized rings encircling each subdial and the tourbillon, the aesthetic is one of precision and harmony.
These blue accents also aid in legibility, contrasting effectively with the rhodium-plated wheels and NAC-treated bridges. The result is an appearance that reveals the inner workings without compromising readability or elegance.
Owners of this timepiece will appreciate its versatility as much as its complexity. It comes with three strap options: a titanium bracelet, a blue rubber strap, and a blue alligator leather strap. These can be swapped without tools thanks to the integrated comfort-adjustment system.
Two titanium folding clasps are included to match the strap choices, ensuring that the timepiece seamlessly transitions from casual sophistication to formal refinement.
