
Ulysse Nardin's Diver [AIR] is an extraordinary timepiece that merges haute horology with high-performance engineering and sustainable innovation. Weighing in at a mere 52 grams, including the strap, and just 46 grams without it, the Diver [AIR] is the lightest mechanical dive watch ever created.
The timepiece is the culmination of decades of expertise in skeletonized movement design and advanced materials science. Ulysse Nardin has pushed the limits of what's possible, delivering a piece that looks exceptional and performs at the highest level, even under extreme conditions.
A Hybrid of Skeleton Artistry and Sport Function

Ulysse Nardin has been producing marine timepieces since the 19th century, but it wasn't until the 2021 Diver X Skeleton that the watchmaker first fused a skeletonized movement with the toughness of a sports watch. The Diver [AIR] takes this concept dramatically further, reducing the weight by half compared to its predecessor while enhancing strength and resilience.
At its core is the new UN-374 caliber, an evolution of the UN-372, re-engineered to reduce weight without sacrificing functionality or durability. Bridges are just a few millimeters wide, the mainspring barrel is reconfigured in a flying arrangement, and the rotor is stripped to its essentials.
What does all that effort get you? A mechanical movement that weighs just 7 grams and yet offers a robust 90-hour power reserve. Not impressed yet? Note that it also meets official dive watch standards, including 200 meters of water resistance.

Now, that's a watch you can take on your diving expedition without worrying about damage. Of course, that's assuming you're not daring enough to go deeper than that (the safe depth for pros is around 100 meters).
Strength Through Design and Innovation
Despite its ultralight construction, the Diver [AIR] does not compromise on structural integrity. Ulysse Nardin's engineers have used the bridges of the movement to form triangle-based geometries - a method well-known in architecture for its strength and resistance to deformation. The skeletonized movement is shock-resistant up to 5,000 g-forces, proving its mettle in lab and real-world endurance testing.

The 44mm case features a modular build with a titanium middle case and side parts made of Nylo®-Foil - a composite of 60% Nylo and 40% carbon fiber. The concave bezel insert, made of CarbonFoil, uses 100% upcycled carbon from high-performance IMOCA sailing boats made by CDK Technologies. The construction blends sustainability with performance, allowing for waterproof integrity while reducing overall mass.
Materials Reimagined
Traditional movements are often made from brass, a dense metal. Ulysse Nardin replaces this with 90% recycled titanium, processed in partnership with TiFast and Thyssenkrupp. This lightweight yet durable material forms the case, the main plate, and bridges. The movement's escapement uses upcycled silicon, and the watch incorporates a silicon balance spring and oversized balance wheel for enhanced precision.
Despite its technical prowess, the watch maintains a striking aesthetic with a minimal skeleton dial, black indexes, and hands with white Super-LumiNova. The Diver [AIR] comes with two ultralight elastic fabric straps in white and orange secured with scratch closures and interchangeable without tools. How well this holds up with repeated diving sessions remains to be seen.

Priced at $38,000, the Ulysse Nardin Diver [AIR] is a statement of what's possible when tradition meets innovation. With 80% of its internal volume consisting of air and the remaining 20% engineered to the finest tolerances, the watch proves that high horology can be bold, technical, sustainable, and ultralight.
While I won't claim to be a Ulysse Nardin fan mainly because of its sketchy (and entirely unnecessarily provocative) Classico Manara collection, that doesn't take anything away from this impressive timepiece.
