The Formula E (FE) FIA racing series will have another new car in the mix when the sixth season kicks off in November. The Silver Arrow 01 FE all-electric race car will take to the track in the new season thanks to Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E. The new electric race car will build on the advancements made since the introduction of the FE generation 2 car, aptly named Gen2.

The Gen2 car is based on a standard-issue chassis that all teams in the series are mandated to use. However, teams have the opportunity to build an FE race car for competition from data and ideas from their own development teams to hopefully build a powertrain, inverter, motor, rear axle, energy management software, and transmission that will push them towards the checkered flag in first place.

The Silver Arrow 01 has a maximum speed of 280 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 3 seconds. Mercedes-Benz will become the first manufacturer to compete in both F1 and FE when the two Silver Arrow 01 cars start their first race this season. Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, says they are looking forward to their venture into FE racing.

“Formula E brings all the enthusiasm and passion for racing to city centers, which is an absolutely unique concept,” said Wolff “This makes the series a completely new playing field for us. But we are looking forward to the challenge of demonstrating the performance of our battery-electric powertrains in motorsport as well, and of giving a positive boost to the EQ brand.”

The Silver Arrow 01 has an overall length of 5160 mm (203.1496 inches) and width of 1770 mm (69.68 inches) with a 3100 mm (122.04 inches) wheelbase and pavement sucking 75 mm (3 inches) ride height. The all-electric race car gets its power from a 385 kg (885-lbs) battery with a capacity of 52kWh that can be fully charged in 45 minutes. At the track, the Silver Arrow 01’s power output will be 250 kW (340 hp) max for practice and qualifying and 200 kW (272 hp) max during a race.

F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne and F2 championship contender Nyck de Vries are the two drivers selected to pilot the new car. Both drivers said the “all-electric” entry to FE racing by a legendary company such as Mercedes-Benz with over 125 years of racing history is exciting.

“I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve as a team,” said Vandoorne. “The potential is huge, and I simply can’t wait to get started.”

Nyck de Vries also mentioned that driving the Silver Arrow 01 would be exciting and he was excited about being teamed up with Vandoorne. “I’m hoping to learn a lot from Stoffel, said Vries, “So that, together, we can get the best possible result(s) for the team”.

The two drivers will be part of Mercedes-Benz and FE history when they pilot the all-electric Silver Arrow 01 in the upcoming season. It’ll be interesting to see if Mercedes will be able to match their F1 success in Formula E.
